This week's theme: Life at sea
Curriculum Highlights:
On Monday, we kicked off week 2's theme of Life at sea by making sponge sail boats. Using sponges, popsicle sticks, and paper, we stuck together and decorated our sails.
On Tuesday, we talked about what animals and things we might see whilst living on the sea, so we made our own individual ocean sensory bottles. The goal of this activity was to increase tactile dexterity and encourage problem solving. Our friends had to use their own ideas to put oddly shaped items into their bottles. Some of the items were really hard, but everyone did their best and managed to create wonderfully crafted ocean themed sensory bottles.
On Wednesday, we got into the main theme with even mote gusto. When we think about living on the sea, one major group of people that comes to mind is Pirates. So, our friends designed and created their own pirate hats. First, we used crayons to colour in. For some friends gripping and applying pressure whilst writing can be a challenge. We focused on showing some techniques and ways they can more successfully draw with the crayons. Second, we used gems and stickers to decorate our hats. Much like how Pirates love shiny and expensive looking things, our friends really enjoyed blinging out their hats. The use of small items such as stickers allows our friends to fine-tune their hand motor skills and also helps promote tactile exploration.
On Thursday, we did a collaborative design activity where we painted our pirate ship. In this activity, our friends worked together as a team to colour and crate our original pirate ship. Working together and learning to share space with others is a very important life skill that we worked on and promoted during this activity. It was lovely to see such wonderful teamwork and cooperation.
On Friday, we wrapped up summer school with a treasure Hunt. Our friends donned their pirate hats, boarded the pirate ship and set out to search for buried treasure around the classroom. This activity allowed students to think and explore the classroom with a new perspective. It was a great way to promote spacial awareness and engage with the world around us. It has been a wonderful last week of summer school, and this activity really brought together all parts of this week's theme.
